- Elizabeth Arden Perfume: Editors Verdict
If you’ve ever been to a department store in any of the 100 countries that Elizabeth Arden is now stocked in, most likely you would have come across an Elizabeth Arden counter. After all, the founder herself once proclaimed that there only three American brands that are known in every corner of the world – Singer Sewing Machines, Coca-Cola and Elizabeth Arden. It is an empire in the beauty industry which has grown from a single Red Door salon established in 1910 on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Today the brand is owned by a parent cosmetics company Revlon who bought it for whopping $870 million in 2016.
Miss Elizabeth Arden, the company’s founder, was to the beauty industry what Coco Chanel was to fashion. A pioneer. She was the first to introduce the concept of a makeover, travel-sized beauty products, destination beauty spa in the US or training and sending out traveling saleswomen to demonstrate her products.
Elizabeth Arden is a luxury brand with higher price points so doing your research before investing in its products is advised. And that is what we are here to help you with. In this Elizabeth Arden review, we are going to have a close look at the brand, its fragrances and skincare products and, of course, existing customer reviews to see whether the brand is worth it. So keep reading to find out.
About Elizabeth Arden
Elizabeth Arden is an American beauty brand, first established in New York in 1910, with offering that spans fragrance, skincare and makeup. The company was established by Miss Elizabeth Arden, born Florence Nightingale Graham, who moved to New York City from rural Canada and opened her first Red Door Salon on Fifth Avenue. By 1929, there were 150 Elizabeth Arden salons across the US and Europe. Miss Elizabeth Arden was the sole owner of the company until her death in 1966 and at one point, she was known to be one of the richest women in the world.
Arden’s philosophy was to combine the powers of nature and science in skincare formulations to develop a woman’s best natural assets. She promoted a rather modern approach to beauty, putting equal emphasis on a diligent skincare routine, exercise and nutrition. She believed in creating products that would benefit its wearer and her skin, rather than masking it, with her mantra being, “To be beautiful is the birthright of every woman.”
At the same time, she was something of a champion of makeup in a time when it wasn’t viewed as something proper or lady-like amongst the general public, rather something associated with theatre and prostitutes. But she established makeup as something to bring a youthful and beautiful image and stressed the importance of it as something appropriate and even necessary.
With its higher price point and lines of anti-ageing products, Elizabeth Arden has always catered mainly to mature women with stars like Catherine Zeta Jones and Reese Witherspoon swearing by the company’s products. Witherspoon has even taken on the role as the face, brand ambassador and Storyteller-in-Chief of Elizabeth Arden.

Elizabeth Arden Fragrances Review
Elizabeth Arden has been widely known for its iconic fragrances ever since the launch of the now iconic Blue Grass in 1936. In fact, perfumes account for more than 75% of the brand’s sales.
My Fifth Avenue Eau de Parfum
One of the newest perfume launches and one of the bestsellers of this heritage brand is the My Fifth Avenue, released in 2018 and inspired by the location where Miss Elizabeth Arden opened her first salon which is also the centre of NYC itself. The bottle is tall, clear and sleek with sharp angles, representing the skyscrapers of Fifth Avenue, with only the perfume’s name in a handwritten style decorating it.
Elizabeth Arden wanted to capture a scent of a woman who is striving to make her mark on the big and overwhelming New York, the city of limitless possibilities. Reese Witherspoon is again the face of this scent and tells her own story about coming to New York and Fifth Avenue in its marketing.
The fragrance itself starts with fresh citrusy notes of mandarin and lemon before turning to floral accords of delicate lotus and confident jasmine. The base is then composed of grounding and warm woody notes of amber woods and cedarwood. It is overall a confident scent.
My Fifth Avenue is available in three sizes – 1 oz for $39, 1.7 oz retailing for $52 and 3.4 oz for $65, which is affordable compared with other brands.
Green Tea Scent Spray
Green Tea by Elizabeth Arden is the image and scent of pure green freshness, perfect for summer months, revealing notes of zingy mint, orange peel and bergamot, soft and green notes of oakmoss, jasmine and green tea with a hint of spicy aromatic accord created by cloves and caraway seed. The fragrance is refreshing and energizing.
The nose behind the award-winning scent named New Zealand’s Best Fragrance in 2011 is perfumer Francis Kurkdjian who has since gone onto starting his own eponymous perfume brand, creating one of the most popular fragrances of recent years, Baccarat Rouge 540.
The fragrance was first launched in 1999 with 90s supermodel Amber Valletta as its face. Since then, the classic has had several makeovers, mixing it with additional hero ingredients such as fig, pomegranate and, most recently, pear blossom.
Due to its fresh nature and low concentration, as it is only a scent spray, the fragrance doesn’t have the longest of longevities. It comes, however, at an affordable price point of $29.50 for 1.7 oz and $39.50 for 3.4 oz.
Elizabeth Arden White Tea Wild Rose Eau De Toilette Spray
Another one of Elizabeth Arden’s bestsellers, the White Tea Wild Rose launched in 2019, together with White Tea Vanilla Orchid, retails for $26 for 1 oz, $42 for 1.7 oz and $56 for 3.3 oz and it’s based on a 2017 release simply called White Tea.
While the original White Tea is pure and captures the demure simplicity of white tea with a sea breeze accord, then developing into the sweetness of white iris and warmth of Madras wood, recreating the moment one sips a cup of white tea by the sea. White Tea Wild Rose builds on this base and starts with the same purity of the white tea top note but its heart note reveals both Bulgarian and Turkish rose, inspired by early summer time when the air warms up and the first roses start to bloom, filling the air with their scent. This fragrance is an ode to summer and to roses.
Since then, the White Tea collection has grown with each year as the brand has also come out with White Tea Mandarin Blossom in 2020 and White Tea Ginger Lily in 2021.
Red Door Eau de Parfum Spray
Another nod to the brand’s history and the iconic Red Door Spa that the brand has been known for since its beginning is the Red Door Eau de Parfum Spray. Red Door is one of the older scents in the Elizabeth Arden collection and could be considered the brand’s signature fragrance, launching in 1989, but has since had a revamp in the form of a new glossy bottle which now resembles an actual red door, matching the one that is now part of the company’s logo. One bottle or another, this scent remains one of the brand’s top sellers to this day.
Red Door is a glamorous and sensual scent opening with rose and plum, then revealing a heart note a floral bouquet of jasmine, orchid and tuberose with the undertones of a base note crafted from honey, sandalwood and amber. This is a scent for a confident woman, a night out or a romantic dinner date.
The fragrance is long-lasting and comes only in a 1.7 oz bottle, selling for $58.
Elizabeth Arden Skin Care Review
Elizabeth Arden was an innovator and a champion of science in cosmetic formulations, creating products and services that women desired and needed and that helped to enhance their natural beauty.
Today, the brand’s website offers bookings of virtual one-on-one consultations with an expert from Elizabeth Arden via a Zoom call while in-store consultations are being put on pause due to the pandemic. The site also offers a diagnostic tool which recommends the best skin care routine made of products that will best fit your skin type and your needs based on a series of questions like:
- It’s the middle of the day, how does your skin feel?
- How many birthdays have you celebrated?
- In an average week, how much time do you spend outside?
- Are you savvy about Suncare?
- What is the primary result you want from your skin care regimen?
Visible Difference Refining Moisture Cream Complex
The Visible Difference Refining Moisture Cream Complex, while being a mouthful, is Elizabeth Arden’s bestselling rich and thick moisturizer, perfect for dryer skin types as it targets dryness and fine lines, providing the skin with lots of moisture and creating an occlusive layer preventing moisture loss.
The ingredients include glycerin, olive fruit oil and squalane, all of which are highly moisturizing, with squalane mimicking the skin’s natural oils which decline with age, boosting collagen production and being a natural antioxidant. A common complaint when it comes to this moisturizer is its rather potent smell, perhaps not ideal for those looking for fragrance-free options.
This moisturizer can be used both during the day and at night and it retails for $55 for 2.5 oz which is definitely on the pricier luxury end of the spectrum.
Retinol Ceramide Capsules Line Erasing Night Serum
The Capsules collection is a perfect example what Elizabeth Arden is all about – innovation and anti-ageing solutions for mature women. While anti-ageing products are not reserved only for the mature as starting early can offset some of the early signs of ageing in the skin, most young people are probably not going to want to or be able to spend between $51 and $107 on a serum which is what the Retinol Ceramide Capsules Line Erasing Night Serum retails for. This serum is one of the brand’s bestsellers and an award-winning one at that, being the winner of the Glamour Beauty Power List in the UK in the Best Retinol category in 2019.
The Ceramide line replenishes the levels of ceramides which are naturally produced by our skin to moisturize it but are gradually lost over time, making the skin visibly rehydrated and supple.
This night serum in particular uses retinol which is a vitamin A derivative, used to treat anti-ageing concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, as well as acne and textured skin.
It is the way that the serum is stored that is the most fascinating and innovative factor of this product. The product comes in capsules, with one bottle containing 30, 60 or 90 capsules. As retinol is sensitive to light and air and might either go off or lose its effectiveness if exposed to it, the capsule keeps it sealed and that way fresh. In fact, this retinol is 76% more potent that any unencapsulated retinol.
The guesswork of how much serum to apply per use is also taken out of the equation as the capsules provide premeasured doses – one capsule a night. The capsules are free of preservatives and fragrance and they are biodegradable as they are made with 100% vegetable and mineral ingredients.
To use, simply twist tab twice and squeeze the serum onto your fingertips. Distribute the serum evenly across the face and follow with your moisturizer.
Ceramide Micro Capsule Skin Replenishing Essence
The Ceramide Micro Capsule Skin Replenishing Essence again utilizes the moisture-boosting power of ceramides, as well as Japanese orchid which instantly revitalizes tired dull-looking skin, red algae which boosts the ceramide production and encapsulated tsubaki oil ferment into micro capsules which conditions the skin.
The texture of the essence is super lightweight, almost water-like, without any drying alcohol or fragrance, which soaks right into the skin without leaving it sticky, instead it leaves it looking plump, hydrated and rejuvenated.
Tip the bottle upside down and shake to get 3 to 5 drops on the palm of your hand. Then gently pat into the skin using both hands. Use on cleansed face before all the other steps in your skin care regimen.
This essence comes either in a 3 oz bottle for $63 or 4.7 oz bottle for $82 which is again on the luxury side in terms of price point.
Elizabeth Arden Customer Reviews
Being a large global empire with decades in the business like Elizabeth Arden is, one is bound to attract both positive raving reviews from women that have used its products for years and years but also negative critiques. When it comes to fragrance, it is difficult to judge a product based on its reviews as everyone’s personal taste is very different. When it comes to skincare, however, that’s where reviews are more relevant because the value of skincare rests fully on results within the skin. While the reviews on Elizabeth Arden skincare are mixed, the majority is positive, with most products scoring a ranking of 4.5/5. Here are some examples of what customers had to say about some of the products we’ve reviewed above:
“I’ve been using this for 6 weeks now. It hasn’t broken my sensitive out, works well under makeup and does a good job hydrating, but it smells so strong. The fragrance is unnecessary and from looking at other reviews, I’m not the only one put off by the smell. My husband commented on it and even my 5 year old said I smelled bad when I hugged him after putting it on. The smell doesn’t last long, but it’s such a strong old perfume smell. I won’t be repurchasing because of this.”
“I have been using Visible Difference for over 30 years. It is my ‘tried and true’ daily moisturizer which I sometimes mix with my foundation, other times with no makeup. The product was off the shelves, and I went looking for it. I have tried many other moisturizers but none compare.”

Elizabeth Arden Perfume: Editors Verdict
Elizabeth Arden as a company has been in the beauty industry for over 100 years and has earned a status of an icon and a classic. That, of course, doesn’t mean that this status shouldn’t be questioned. So do we think that Elizabeth Arden is worth it? In terms of its perfume, we believe that some of the scents are indeed lovely and iconic for a reason as in the case of the Red Door or Green Tea. They are affordable too which makes them accessible to a wider market. In terms of the skincare, we would only recommend it to people with more mature skin and who can afford to splash out on their skincare as it is certainly not cheap and there are more affordable options out there that are just as good.
