A luminous, healthy complexion is on most beauty wish-lists, but sometimes our skin just doesn’t want to play ball. Pimples, congestion and excess sebum can all lead to unsightly blackheads which can also be notoriously stubborn to remove. Exfoliation, steaming, deep pore treatments and cleansing can all help to remove and reduce blackheads but sometimes your skin may need a little extra help to make those blackheads disappear. Which is where a pore vacuum comes in.

These neat devices work like a vacuum for your face and claim to be able to literally suck all that pore gunk away. And used in conjunction with an appropriate skin cleansing and care routine, a pore vacuum could help to make a difference when it comes to radiant, blemish-free skin.

To help you decide whether you and your skin could benefit from a little pore pulling power, we take a look at some of the best blackhead remover vacuums you can buy.

Best Blackhead Remover Vacuums Buying Guide

Do Pore Vacuums Really Work?

As a temporary solution to congested skin, pore vacuums – also known as a dermasuction pore cleaning device - can work but if used on their own will not be the solution to clearing blackheads or acne. However, they are an effective treatment if used in conjunction with a proper skin care routine to help deep cleanse and clear your skin.

Blackheads are formed when a hair follicle (pore) gets clogged up with dead skin cells as well as the natural oils or sebum that are produced by your skin. Unlike other skin treatments, which work to exfoliate or dissolve this gunk, a pore vacuum quite literally sucks out the congestion out of your pores. Removing all the muck that is plugging your skin can also help to refine the look of any visible pores.

However, a blackhead and pimple remover only removes impurities as you have them at any one time and so cannot prevent blackheads re-forming. And the devices can be a little on the harsh side, especially if over-used or used on sensitive skin, not only leaving it temporarily reddened but raising the risk of bruising or the development of small spider veins.

How To Use a Blackhead Remover Vacuum

It goes without saying that you should always follow the manufacturer’s user instructions to the letter, to get the very best results out of the blackhead remover vacuum you have chosen. However, there are some basics you should know when it comes to using your new blackhead vacuum:

  • Always use any facial pore cleanser on thoroughly cleansed and dried skin
  • Choose the appropriate pre-sanitized nozzle and, if it is the first time using a pore vacuum, then set it on the lowest suction setting
  • Place the suction tip on the congested area you want to treat (nose or chin, for example), you should feel a suction sensation against your skin
  • Gently and slowly moving the tip in smooth strokes, normally towards the outside of your face
  • Keep the nozzle moving, making sure you don’t leave it on one spot for too long
  • Be careful not to apply too much pressure as this can cause bruising
  • Repeat as appropriate, being careful not to overuse the device in one go
  • Once you have finished, always remove the nozzle and thoroughly cleanse before packing your blackhead remover vacuum away
  • Mist your face with cold water if you experience any reddening, then apply a light moisturizer

FAQ

How often should I use a pore vacuum?

Experts recommend using a dermasuction pore cleansing device a maximum of two to three times a week, for no more than five minutes at a time if you want the best results. It is also important not to over-use a pore vacuum as it can irritate and inflame the skin.

What should I put on my face before the pore vacuum?

A pore vacuum should only be used on thoroughly cleansed skin. But prior to using the device, it can be a good idea to gently steam your face or used an over-the-counter cleanser that contains salicylic acid. Steam (say, from a hot shower or a face cloth soaked in warm water) will help open up the pores. You could also exfoliate your skin, using a gentle product containing glycolic acid. Salicylic acid can help to start breaking down the dead skin and oils that are clogging your pores, making your skin more open to the effects of the best vacuum blackhead remover.

Are there any side effects of using a blackhead remover vacuum?

If used on the correct setting and as per the manufacturer’s instructions, a pore vacuum is safe to use. However, you may experience temporary side effects, including skin redness. And using a blackhead remover vacuum to vigorously or for too long can lead to some bruising. Prolonged over-use can also lead to a condition called telangiectasis – or spider veins – which is where you get small dilated or broken blood vessels appearing just under the surface of the skin.

Pre-existing conditions, such as rosacea or sensitivities can also make the skin more vulnerable to bruising or spider veins so extra caution is needed if using a pore vacuum.
