A good face mask can not only boost your skin hydration, reduce inflammation, and even out your skin tone, but it can also help take the stress out of a long day – win-win if you ask us!
But while going to a spa or using store-bought sheet masks is great from time to time, it may not always be feasible. For such days, we recommend making your own face masks. Trust us on this – while they’re easy to make, they can be incredibly effective if you use the right ingredients. For example, oatmeal is wonderful for reducing irritation and redness, while honey is fantastic at fighting acne-causing bacteria and healing the skin. So, whether you’re dealing with breakouts, dry and rough patches, or you just want to give your skin some TLC, here are some of the best homemade face masks to whip up right now.
1. Redness-Reducing Oatmeal Mask
Oatmeal is easily one of the best ingredients for soothing the skin and reducing irritation, redness, and inflammation. In fact, colloidal oatmeal is an FDA-approved “skin protectant”, meaning it’s scientifically proven to be effective at relieving irritation, itching, and redness. For this reason, you can find it in many commercial skincare products aimed at treating various skin conditions, including eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and more. Oatmeal is also brilliant for calming down those itchy pimples, so it’s great not only for dry and itchy skin but acne-prone skin too. Heck, oatmeal baths are even recommended for kids with chicken pocks! Seriously, it’s one of the best and most versatile skin care ingredients and you’d benefit greatly by incorporating it into your skincare routine.
To make this DIY soothing face mask, you’ll need:
- ½ cup ground oatmeal
- Half a mashed banana
- 1 tablespoon raw honey
- 1 teaspoon grapeseed oil for oily skin/almond oil for dry skin
If you find this mask too thick for your liking, you can add a few droplets of water and stir until you achieve the desired consistency. Apply the mask to cleansed skin and leave it on for about 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and follow with your usual serum and moisturizer.
2. Brightening Turmeric Mask
Turmeric has been used for centuries both for its flavor and medicinal purposes, including skin benefits. Packed with curcuminoids, which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, as well as other powerful antioxidants, this bright yellow spice has many skin health benefits. In particular, it can help fight inflammatory acne and hyperpigmentation. If you struggle with patches of skin that are darker than the rest of your face or body (they may be brown, red, or purple), turmeric is highly likely to help brighten up those pesky spots and even out your skin tone. When mixed with yogurt or kefir, a turmeric face mask will also provide gentle exfoliation, which is perfect if you’ve been worshipping the sun a little too long.
For this easy turmeric DIY face mask, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt
- 1 teaspoon quality honey
- A few drops of grapeseed /squalene/rosehip oil (optional)
Normally, turmeric stains the skin yellow which can be hard to wash off, but you can avoid this by adding some full-fat yogurt and/or a few drops of face oil into the mix. If you opt for using oils, we recommend grapeseed or rosehip oil for greasy skin, and squalene or almond oil for dry skin.
3. Exfoliating Papaya Mask
If your skin looks a little dull and your pores feel clogged, this easy DIY face mask with papaya is sure to bring back glow to your complexion! Papaya contains exfoliating enzymes that help gently slough off dead skin cells, revealing fresh skin beneath. This can help brighten and even out your complexion, and even reduce mild hyperpigmentation. Papain, one of the enzymes that papaya is packed with, can also help remove damaged keratin, which if left on the skin for too long, can build up and cause small bumps and closed comedones. And being so rich in antioxidants, papaya can even help reduce the appearance of fine lines if used regularly.
For a simple DIY face mask with papaya, you’ll need:
- ¼ mashed papaya
- 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon honey
The mask should have a smooth consistency, so either thoroughly mash the ingredients together or toss them in a blender. For extra exfoliation and brightness, you can also add several drops of lemon (but no more than 10!) to the mix. Apply the mask to the clean skin, wait about 10 min and then rinse off. Follow with your usual skincare routine and SPF if you’re going out.
4. Moisturizing Avocado Mask
Is your skin dry and a little bit rough to touch? You need hydration and moisturization! Avocados are packed to the brim with nourishing oils which can help deeply moisturize the skin and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. They’re also a good source of biotin, which has some moisturizing effects on dry skin when applied topically. Avocados are also rich in vitamins E and C, both of which play a key role in the health and protection of your skin barrier. Another benefit of avocados is that they can help boost collagen production and soothe inflammation. When mixed with ground oats, avocados are particularly great at decreasing irritation and itchiness, which is something that folks with extremely dry skin often suffer from.
For this moisturizing and hydrating DIY face mask, use the following ingredients:
- ¼ mashed avocado
- 1 teaspoon argan oil or almond oil
- 1 tablespoon rose water or plain water
- 1 tablespoon ground oats
While you can manually mash all the ingredients together, we recommend chucking them in a blender if you have it – the process is much faster plus you’ll get an even, smooth consistency. For maximum hydration, cleanse your face and use your favorite hydrating serum/toner before applying the mask – the oils will lock in the moisture and allow your skin to absorb as much hydration as possible. After about 15 minutes, wash off with a gentle cleanser and follow with the same serum/toner, and then moisturizer.
5. Acne-Fighting Honey Mask
Good-quality honey such as manuka honey is packed with components that are beneficial for skin health. In fact, multiple studies have shown that raw honey has wound-healing and antimicrobial properties, making it fantastic for acne-prone skin and various skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis. Manuka honey, in particular, has been studied as an anti-acne treatment and found to be highly effective at both preventing new acne and reducing the inflammation of the existing acne. Raw honey also has mild exfoliating properties, so it can help remove dead skin cells, unveiling new, fresh skin beneath. Honey is especially potent at protecting the skin against oxidative stress and reducing acne-caused inflammation when combined with green tea as both ingredients are incredibly rich in antioxidants and have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
For an easy homemade honey face mask that fights acne, you’ll need:
- 2 tablespoons raw honey (preferably Manuka honey)
- 1 teaspoon green tea powder
- 1 tablespoon yogurt or Kefir
- ½ teaspoon turmeric
If you don’t have green tea powder at home, you can brew a strong cup of tea and use the leaves once the tea bag has cooled down for the mixture. Just make sure you grind or blend the leaves before mixing. Whatever you end up using, remember to apply the mask to a freshly cleansed face and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Thoroughly rinse with lukewarm water and follow your usual skincare routine.
