Conquering Ourselves

Greetings from Big Sky, Montana! Every year a big group of family + friends gather at our cabin for a week of skiing, card playing, whisky drinking, and more country music than would normally be acceptable to our East Coast contingent. It’s a tradition that grounds us all and gives me a renewed sense of optimism and strength. Although I’ve been skiing most of my life, I still get nervous when I’m standing at the top of a run. All of those fears and self-doubt bubble up and, for that split second before shoving off, I wonder if I will even remember how to ski. But then there’s the exhilaration of those first few turns, the feel of the powder underfoot, and the relief of making it to the bottom in one piece. It’s a bit of a metaphor for my life lately. It’s big and it’s moving fast and I can’t always see the terrain up ahead. But once I take a deep breath and point those tips down, the path always becomes clear. I just need to get comfortable with carving it out as a I go. And that, my friends, comes down to trusting that we already have everything we need to make it down—or up—the mountain.
