Red Carpet Beauty In Real Life

julia roberts // red carpet 2015

No matter how many magazine I read or cute-hair pins I pin, the awards season takes the Oscar for stirring up some serious beauty yearnings in my soul. The red carpet is where I learned to pair a red dress with bubble-gum pink lip, and navy shadow with canary yellow. The best part is that you don’t have to be a celebrity with an entourage of hair and makeup people to translate their glamorous looks into real life. This spring I’m taking cues from Julia Roberts, whose fresh take on the classic updo, smoky eye and nude lip reaffirmed that some things never go out of style—and will never wind up on a what-not-to-wear list!

THE HAIR // I don’t do complicated up-dos for everyday, but I love a bouncy ponytail. Smooth, healthy-looking hair is everything when you’re trying to create this natural look. Try Clairol Natural Instincts Shine Happy ($8) clear glaze for a shot of salon-quality shine. It’s formulated with aloe, vitamins and no ammonia so you get all the gorgeous, without all the guilt.

Before you pull it back, give hair some lift and grip. I’m obsessed with volumzing dry shampoos for this. Spritz Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo ($8) at the roots—it sops up oil with natural tapioca and zero parabens—tousle with fingers for bounce, then create your pony. Imperfect is a good thing here!

THE SKIN // Bold makeup draws attention to your face, so keep skin flawless and dewy with Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream ($25). De-puff, banish dark circles and hydrate undereyes with Olay Regenerist Luminous Touch Dark Circle Correcting Hydraswirl ($25).

THE MAKEUP // For a simple smoldering eye, all it takes is a wash of dark charcoal shadow from lash line to just beyond the crease. Try CoverGirl Flamed Out in Molton Black ($4). You can even smudge it along your lower lash line in lieu of a pencil. Finish with two coats of volumizing mascara like CoverGirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara ($11). Smokey eyes and nude lips go hand in hand—the contrast is just stunning. CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lip Color in Forever Fawn ($10) is a pretty neutral that will flatter most skin types and won’t budge for hours.
