How to Fake Big Hair with Hot Rollers + Giveaway!

As a child of the 80s, I have a few givens in my DNA: an obsession with John Hughs movies, a weakness for preppy dressers, and a nostalgia for hair commercials. I can still hear Vidal Sassoon saying “If we don’t look good, you don’t look good” in his velvety French accent. He was an icon, just like the chic bob he inspired millions of women to cut—including me. Today I wear my hair longer, and even though I’ve accepted that it’s naturally straight and fine, the 80s girl in me wants it as big as possible. Who better to help me achieve a Bangles-worthy ‘do than the new Vidal Sassoon Pro Series + hot rollers?! I’ve been experimenting with both and feel pretty pleased with myself, and the results—super bouncy, professional-blowout volume in about 10 minutes. Here are my tricks:

Vidal Sassoon Hot Roller Tutorial

1. Start with dry hair (it doesn’t have to be clean). I gave mine a boost with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Foaming Air Mousse and Heat Protect and Shine Spray. There’s no need get heavy handed with a round brush as the hot rollers will do to the heavy lifting.

2. This is my hair after a typical blowdry. Nice and healthy, but borrrring.

3. Before rolling, mist dry hair as you go with a super-strength but non-crunchy hair spray (that magnificent can is Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Extra Firm Hold Hairspray).

4. Start rolling. I’m absolutely mad for T3 Volumious Hot Rollers because they heat up fast and are bigger than most (2 inches). You want lift and bounce—not the tight, bottom-heavy spirals of someone’s senior prom…Start at the crown and roll up and away from my face for maximum height.

5. Continue rolling, focusing the biggest rollers on top. Roll from ends to roots to ensure nice swooping strands, not wonky ends. Once you’ve rock and rolled your entire head, let them set for a few minutes if you’re in a hurry, or until cool. You really can’t mess this part up.

6. Remove rollers. Gentle tousle with fingers. Mist with hairspray. Admire your major hair in mirror.

What do you think? I’d love to know what DIY hairstyles you’ve been experimenting with, too. I can use all the help I can get!
