Nontoxic Target Beauty Buys

Have you noticed all the healthier products available at Target? Here are some of my favorites!

Target is has really been hitting the bullseye lately (mic drop? no?) with its mix of nontoxic beauty + wellness products. Not only is our hometown retail hero requiring its suppliers to list all ingredients on every product, its also encouraging them to do whatever they can to remove scary ingredients from their formulas. We love seeing big boxes help more people have access to these healthy options at every price point! I’ve been scooping up some good-for-you Target buys whenever I find myself wandering the aisles, which is often. Here are some of my current favorites:

  1. W3LL People Bio Tint Multi-Action Moisturizing Foundation – Target has partnered with W3LL PEOPLE to bring nontoxic, plant-powered cosmetics to a larger market, and everything in the collection is amazing! Be sure to try the Bio TintBio Correct and award-winning Expressionist Mascara.
  2.  PLANT Apothecary Body Wash is made with organic essential oils and never any harsh chemicals, plus each scent is designed to help you feel better.
  3. Burt’s Bee’s Lipstick is a staple, floating around at the bottom of pretty much every bag I own. Affordable, feels good on the lips, and comes in a huge range of colors.
  4. Dr. Bronner’s Castille Soap is a classic! And a staple in our home thanks to its 18 plus uses and therapeutic aromas.

Honest Beauty’s Bundle Program is Brilliant

Review of Honest Beauty's Bundle Program | Beauty Bets

After all of these years, the best beauty products are still the ones that perform while being safe, healthy and nontoxic. Add delivery right to my door and I’m practically sold. Take the new Honest Beauty Bundle service, an affordable way to test drive new green beauty items. I could see for myself how cute the packaging was, and well, everything Jessica Alba touches turns to gold. As for the ingredients, all the products are free of parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde carriers, PEGs, synthetic fragrance, propylene glycol, mineral oil, SLS and even chemical sunscreens. I couldn’t say no to Honest Beauty’s Bundle!

The online bundle service costs $50 for three products of your choice (yes, YOU get to pick what arrives in your box), bringing the cost down to a little over $17 per product. For green makeup! This is simply unheard of. You can also add on up to five more products for 25% off the original prices if three just isn’t enough. Is it ever?

Make sure to add an eyeshadow trio to your bundle. It’s one of their best products! I really love the Soft Sand Trio for an everyday look and the packaging makes it easy to travel with. My other favorite is the Demi Matte Truly Kissable Lip Crayon. These give a near matte appearance, but are very silky on the lips and packed with pigment. Finally, the cream blushes. Swoon! The shade Truly Exciting is versatile for everyday and is never sticky on the skin like some creams can feel.

The real kicker for the Honest Beauty Bundle is their 365 day return policy and the cancel at anytime policy for the bundle service. I’ve received a few bundles now and I have to say I am so thrilled with the products and service. I can choose how often the bundles ship and I’ve returned products I didn’t love, hassle-free.

Give it a whirl and pick out your products! Let us know if your experience is as stellar as mine!

Review: Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

Should you be taking Collagen Peptides? Here are some of the advantages to this wonder powder.
Collagen that you eat? It sounded crazy to me too, at first. I thought I’d give it a try after I learned that collagen is really essential for so many functions in our bodies.  The theory is that our diets are low in collagen, compared to our ancestors, because we don’t eat as much of the animal parts as our ancestors did (sorry if you just puked in your mouth a bit, but those folks wasted nothing, you know?). Adding Callagen Peptides to your diet could benefit you even if you already have a healthy lifestyle.

Collagen, like the Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides I’ve been experimenting with, contains amino acids that are used as building blocks for our skin, nails, hair, bones and joints. Not only does collagen promote skin elasticity, it can also prevent injury in athletes by protecting against connective tissue damage. Skin benefits? I’m listening, now.

The most surprising thing about the Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides is that they are flavorless! The product is a very fine powder that won’t change the texture of whatever you’re adding it to. I have been adding the peptides to a smoothie or yogurt for an instant upgrade, but I’ve even tried them in tea and juice for a quick boost. This powder is not only a great way to try collagen, but a sneaky way to increase my protein intake as two scoops contain a whopping 18 grams of protein. A protein supplement that helps my skin and joints without changing the taste or texture of my meal? Yes, please!

Have you given Collagen Peptides a try? We’d love to hear what you think in the comments section.

Review: Function of Beauty

In an age of subscription services that want to command your mailbox once a month with dozens of new products, businesses are hoping to stand out by offering personalized products specifically developed or formulated for your needs. One of these is Function Of Beauty. Answer just a few questions through the company’s virtual hair quiz about your hair type, texture, and goals, and a chemist will custom-make a set of shampoo + conditioner just for you. You even get to choose the color + scent (probably my favorite part) along with a personalized message for the bottles. Not only is the packaging adorable, but the formula should help you reach your personal hair goals by targeting concerns such as dryness, growth, color protection + more.

After realizing I was sensitive to sulfates (aren’t we all?) I began my search for the best sulfate-free shampoos. I’m happy to report that I’ve found many options that perform just as well as their conventional counterparts, Function of Beauty included. The company’s blends are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, GMOs and Triclosan!

I loved my experience with Function of Beauty so much that I zoomed through my first two bottles and was putting a dent in my second set before I remembered to pause, review, and take some photos. Anyone who has switched to sulfate-free shampoo will tell you that it takes some getting used to. Sulfates, after all, are what make shampoo lather and bubble, so cleaning your hair with a sulfate-free formula is a different experience that can take some practice.

A word about sulfate-free shampoos: Think of them as something that is going to absorb all the oil off your scalp and hair, and help you transfer the oil to the area of your hair where you want it (your ends!). Traditional shampoo tends to pick the oils up and remove them from your head altogether when you rinse out the shampoo, but a sulfate-free shampoo should pick the oil up from your roots and disperse it throughout your hair, so that you still benefit from those beneficial oils. A rookie will massage sulfate-free shampoo into their scalp, rinse it off, and be furious when they blow dry their hair only to find their roots oily and heavy. Take the time to massage the sulfate-free formula into your roots to lift up and absorb the oil, then continue to work it throughout your hair all the way to the ends. Follow up by rinsing hair with conditioner and get ready to love your locks.

After several weeks of keeping the natural oils on your hair, you’ll notice a difference in the overall health. I feel like my hair has more natural shine and I love the added body created by having hair that isn’t squeaky clean. Leaving some of those natural oils not only benefit the health of your hair, but they also help add amazing lift!

Have you tried a sulfate-free shampoo like Function of Beauty? Will you add it to your ever-growing list of monthly subscriptions?

Recovery Smoothie Recipe

Recovery Smoothie Recipe | Beauty Bets

Is it really a party without bubbles? Hardly. In fact, 25 percent of yearly champagne sales are made between Christmas and New Years. We indulge even though we are old enough to know that a few too many glasses of the good stuff will leave us feeling anything but bubbly the next day. I get tired, cranky, and yes…even hungover. Sometimes my skin even gets dry and dull looking. Enter my secret weapon: the Recover Smoothie.

Sure, it sounds like a post-workout bevvie, but it’s actually a lifesaver for beating the booze blues. Simply blend the ingredients together, toss it into a pretty glass, and sip on the couch with your latest Netflix-binge-of-choice (we can’t stop talking about The Crown). While you relax, this little elixir works it’s magic. It’s chock-full of superfoods that help you heal from the inside out, including dates, cucumbers, ginger and coconut water.

Ginger aids digestion and can soothe any lingering nausea. The banana energizes with healthy carbohydrates and a dose of potassium to calm muscle contractions. Cucumber is a fast and powerful way to rehydrate the body, and coconut water packs an electrolyte punch. Lastly, adding a teaspoon or two of seeds (pumpkin, flax, hemp or sunflower) will add fiber to help extract extra toxins and support digestion. Remember: This too shall pass!

Recovery Smoothie Recipe | Beauty Bets

5 ice cubes
½ banana
½ cucumber
1 in. knob ginger
1-2 tsp. ground seeds (I used sunflower)
¾ cup coconut water (I used Vitacoco)

Add all ingredients to a high speed blender and pulse until smooth. Pour into your favorite smoothie glass and enjoy!
