No Pressure.

My parents have always (half) joked that they didn’t need to put any pressure on me as a kid because I did it all by myself. I came out of the womb that way: wanting the best, the most, and determined to get it. Whatever “it” was has of course changed over the years: good grades and state tennis championships became getting into a top college, having an amazing career, getting married, buying a house, starting a business. I’m not sure I ever stopped to really ask myself WHY I wanted these things. They were just on the list I checked off in a timely fashion to ensure happiness and success. We all know where this is going . . . Once you accomplish what you set out to do you’ve often changed, only to discover that you now want something more or different, and—surprise!—you aren’t necessarily any happier than when you started. At this point the insanity cycle starts all over again. I find myself in this position now, as is often the case with a new year. It’s a natural time to reassess and reset. Only I’m not sure what I want next. I don’t have some big goal to tackle or obsess about. This would normally leave me feeling utterly unhinged. Aimlessness equals anxiety. But after a couple weeks of sleepless nights and googling for answers without knowing the question, I’ve decided to try something completely different. I’m going to stop seeking, stop workshopping, stop trying to solve. Life is henceforth going to be a no pressure zone. I don’t have to tell you that this scares the hell out of me. But I’m also kind of excited to see where just being takes me. I’ll keep you posted!
