A Fragrance for the Bombshell in Us All

I was never a big fan of Tom Ford’s much-lauded Black Orchid fragrance. I had friends who wore it and I adored it on them, but on me, it fell flat. I’m a big fan of “loud” perfumes that linger throughout the day and make your presence known in a room after you’ve left it, so I was bummed that Black Orchid and I just didn’t jive. I did, however, love the sophisticated black Art-Deco bottle and the super-sexy campaigns.

Tom must have read my mind (he’s so handsome and talented why wouldn’t he also be able to read minds of adoring blonde strangers?) because he released Velvet Orchid, a companion “flanker” that smells similar to Black Orchid, but a bit more ladylike. It’s not QUITE as in-your-face as Black Orchid, but it’s no wilting flower either. Notes of rum and honey keep Velvet Orchid sweet without being cloying, and a bit of citrus lifts it up at first spray. It’s a scent the classic Hollywood beauties would reach for; It’s Elizabeth Taylor bottled, all curves and romance with a sassy backbone. If you need a sexy but incredibly romantic and feminine scent for your next big date night, black tie affair, trip to Paris—or Vegas, which is where I’m taking mine—Velvet Orchid is the one.
