Best Sunscreens 2013

Forgive me! It’s July and I’m only now getting to this list. Which goes to show just how many sunscreens I tested this year—and how few sunny days I had to put them to the test. Hopefully I’m just in time for your Independence Day festivities! Here’s what I’ll be toting to our friends’ the annual BBQ in the ‘burbs. (clockwise)

Best for Body: Josie Maran Argan Sun Protection SPF 30+ ($34). Though it’s out of stock at the moment, I’d be remiss to exclude one of the few sunscreens that claim to be moisturizing and actually is. No weird scent or finish that makes my skin crawl like other all-natural sun blocks either. Just simple creamy, all-around perfection.

Best for Kids: The Honest Co. Sunscreen SPF 30 ($14). You don’t need to be a mom to appreciate Jessica Alba’s eco-living endeavor, especially when it yields such a pure, perfect product for the entire family. Mineral sunblocks (in this case, non-nano zinc) are the best in my book in terms of safety, staying-power, and texture. This one has it all, plus a pretty sweet price point.

Best for Eyes: SuperGoop! SPF 32 Anti-aging Eye Cream ($45). A bit of a splurge for sunscreen, but wait—there’s more. This one is packed with illuminators that gives the eye area an unbelievable glow, plus a cooling, de-puffing applicator. Kind of addicted.

Best Water-Resistant Body: Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Sunscreen SF 50 ($25). Lightweight, unscented, non-tacky or greasy, and big-time protective, Kiehl’s new sun care line nails it in every department. I only wish it were free of a few more synthetics.

Best Water-Resistant Face: Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 ($34). Still a revelation to me after wearing it all last summer, this incredibly lightweight fluid feels more like liquid than a cream yet has the horse-power of ye old lifeguard sport blocks. Ideal if you’re going to sweat, get wet, on the go, or generally hate the feeling of sunscreen.

Best Tinted Face: Coola Mineral Face Rose Essence SPF 20 ($36). If there were a Beauty Bets sunscreen hall of fame, Coola’s entire mineral collection would be in it. I could use all-natural from head to toe but what I really live for is the delicately tinted, beautifully scented rose version.
