My Bug Spray, My Perfume

Mmmm, what’s the smell?
Oh that? It’s my new bug spray.

This was the conversation last night with a friend who caught a whiff of my eau de insect repellent from Intelligent Nutrients ($28). You’d never guess that it would smell more like a spicy-sweet Aveda-esque perfume than a can of OFF, but it does. It’s so intoxicating that I wear it even when I’m not going anywhere within earshot of mosquitos. But it works on those, too—I tested it on my last hike through the woods. Who knew that essential oils like rosemary, cinnamon, geranium and clove naturally deters insects? I should’ve. Everywhere I look essential oils are having a resurgence—as acne treatments, sleep aids, stomach soothers, etc.  They could probably end the country’s budget crisis if we let them. The certified organic, DEET and pesticide-free blend is also available in serum form ($26). You can wear them alone, layer for extra protection, or reserve the spray as an environmental repellent, as you would a citronella candle. Insects optional.  —Elizabeth
