Pregnancy Beauty: All-Natural Eye Makeup

Pregnancy beauty is a big (read: controversial) topic to broach, so I’ve enlisted Nature of Beauty founder Terri Bly to lend a health-conscious yet realistic perspective to what I’m sure will become an ongoing discussion!

Q: Since switching to natural products during my pregnancy, I constantly have makeup smudges under my eyes! What am I doing wrong and how can I avoid this? Also, any suggestions for all-natural eyeshadows in the dark brown shades I love? –Carla

A: The makeup-under-the-eyes issue is a common one when you switch to natural or organic products. First, try setting your concealer or eye cream with a very light dusting of finely milled translucent powder. Alima finishing powder is great, as it Jane Iredale’s matte loose powder. Second, consider using an eye gel in place of a cream. Gels absorbs more readily into the skin, providing less opportunity for eye makeup to slide.

If neither of the above solves the problem, your mascara is likely the culprit. Unfortunately, mascara is one of the trickiest products in the natural beauty world. About 85 percent of my customers love love love Couleur Caramel. I can wear it all day without any smudging, smearing or flaking. My sister, on the other hand, finds the stuff smudging after just a few hours. That being said, I always recommend trying at least two mascaras. Jane Iredale Longest Lash is my other top pick. Whichever you choose, don’t skip the finishing powder.

As for eyeshadows, Couleur Caramel is the BEST source for gorgeous brown shades, both matte and shimmery. The browns, taupes, and cocoas that are to die for!
